An Independence fire captain suffered minor injuries this morning when he fell down some stairs while fighting a fire.

The captain was taken to a hospital as a precaution, said Independence Assistant Fire Chief Mark Carrick. The captain is expected to be released to full duty later today.

The fire broke out about 1:50 a.m. Tuesday in a single-story house in the 800 block of South Mills Street.

Two people were inside at the time and were awakened by smoke. They called 911.

Last weekend was a busy one for the Yuma Fire Department, involving a series of extremely unusual emergency responses.

On Sunday at about 2 p.m., the YFD responded to a report of a man trapped in a palm tree at 1651 S. 6th Ave.

The man was trimming the tree when he became entangled in his harness. The YFD technical rescue team rescued the man from the tree in winds gusting between 20 and 30 mph. The man was not injured.

Richmond firefighters rescued a woman from the edge of a bridge yesterday, quickening their effort after she told them her legs were weakening.

Police were summoned about 12:25 p.m. after a passer-by saw the woman on the side of the Curtis Holt Sr. Bridge along North Fifth Street just north of Hospital Street.

Police notified firefighters who arrived to find the woman clinging to the outside of a fence on the eastern side of the bridge, which overlooks railroad tracks more than 100 feet below, fire officials said.

This fatal fire in a duplex on South 10th street in St. Joseph claims multiple lives Monday morning.

The death toll has reached four in a fire early Monday at 2326 S. 10th St.

Authorities confirmed Monday afternoon that two infants, a 2- month-old girl and a 4-month-old boy, were among the dead.

FAIR OAKS, Va. -- Two Fairfax County firefighters were injured battling an apartment fire last night amid a snowstorm that hit the area, according to WJLA-TV.

Snow caused a portion of the roof to collapse sending one firefighter down three floors from a balcony. Another firefighter was transported to the Washington Burn Center after his face mask became dislodged.

Fire officials told the news station that the injuries sustained by the firefighters were minor.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.

A plane has crashed in a Lawrenceville neighborhood Monday afternoon, officials said, killing the pilot.

The plane went down on Simmons Circle near Spring Circle at about 5 p.m. Gwinnett County Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said it appeared the plane clipped the tree line behind a house on Simmons Circle after taking off from Briscoe Field. The plane did not hit any houses.

The plane was engulfed in flames, firefighters said.

Feb. 8--A Fort Worth firefighter was killed and two other firefighters were injured this weekend in a one-vehicle rollover crash on a New Mexico highway.

David Eaves, 40, an 11-year veteran of the department, was ejected from the vehicle shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 64 near Raton, according to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety.

Medina firefighters had to extricate a woman who fell through a rotting floor in the bathroom of her split-level home Monday.

The 58-year old Kenner Drive woman hung suspended after one leg went through the floor that gave away, Medina Fire Chief Bob Painter said.

A leak in the plumbing to the toilet caused extensive water damage to the flooring, he said.

Feb. 8--Firefighters this afternoon battled a huge warehouse fire in East San Jose that sent towering plumes of smoke into the air that could seen throughout much of the South Bay.

More than 90 firefighters from the San Jose and Santa Clara County fire departments were called in to fight the four-alarm blaze, which destroyed an abandoned, graffiti-scarred warehouse at Dobbin Street and North King Road.
