On Friday, Dec. 30, the third round of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) for FY2011 was announced.

The primary goal of the AFG funds is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical services organizations. Another goal of the program is to target high-risk populations and reduce injury and prevent death.

City managers and fire chiefs in all four towns are scheduled to discuss the possibility in January.

PINEVILLE, Ky. -- Years of threats by leaders of the Bell County Volunteer Fire Department (BCVFD) to close stations citing a lack of funding materialized over the weekend and two fire stations were closed down.

The Arjay and the Colmar Fire Stations were closed, and a "closed" sign was prominently displayed at the Colmar station.

This move follows years of dramatic argument between the leaders of the Bell County Volunteer Fire Department and the Bell County Fiscal Court over funding.

The village of Barrington has denied a request by the Barrington Fire Protection District for the hiring of seven additional firefighter/paramedics to help serve the district's larger area surrounding the village.

So fire district trustees Monday came up with a backup suggestion that the village move one person per shift from the fire station in Barrington to the one in Barrington Hills.

Minn. Firefighters Exceed Memorial Fund Goal

Since 1881, 194 Minnesota firefighters have died in the line of duty, according to the Minnesota Fire Service Foundation.

In July, the Blaine-based nonprofit launched a fundraising initiative to build a memorial on state Capitol grounds to honor those fallen firefighters.

Drastic cuts to the USFA, SAFER and AFG were included in the conference report to the "megabus" appropriations bill passed by the Senate on Saturday.

The measure -- now awaiting President Obama's signature – was the last thing Senators had to do before heading home for the holidays.

The bill -- which is 1,221 pages long -- includes an increase in funding for ¬Urban Search and Rescue Teams.

Despite the $67.5M cut to SAFER, the IAFF said they were pleased.

DENVER

The Colorado Attorney General has filed a suit aimed at dissolving the nonprofit organization behind the Colorado Firefighters calendar.

According to the complaint, filed in Denver District Court, Fired Up For Kids solicited donations through the sale of calendars to raise money for the Children’s Hospital Burn Unit.
