Akron only saved about $21,000 by laying off 38 firefighters, Phil Gauer, president of the fire union, testified Thursday.

The city saved on salaries and benefits, but had to pay for accumulated vacation and comp time and will have to cover unemployment compensation, Gauer said during a Civil Service Commission hearing.

Nov. 18--TIVOLI -- A fire that displaced a Tivoli family last week has rekindled a second plea for a pumper truck from the unincorporated community's volunteer fire department.

Last Tuesday, the idea got support from Refugio County commissioners when they voted unanimously to seek bids on a the truck after the Tovar family lost its home, said Rene Mascorro, county judge.

As an inaugural blog I figured I'd update everyone on where things are at with the AFG-related programs:

2008 AFG – no that's not a typo, they're still working on 2008 awards. A problem was found with the computer scoring from 2008 so DHS went back and ran the applications that should have been read back through the Peer Review from 2009 AFG in July. Basically Round 38 and on were all "corrected" awards from 2008.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today the House passed a measure reauthorizing the FIRE Act grant programs.

The bill sets aside $1B for AFG and $1.2M for SAFER annually through 2014.

The legislation, which passed by a 395-31 vote, includes the establishment of a survey to determine if departments are adhering to safety practices; OKs funds for river rescue operations; and authorizes grant money to be spent for equipment that conserves water.

INDIANAPOLIS

The proposed merger of the Lawrence Township and Indianapolis Fire departments took a step forward Tuesday night.

Lawrence Township Trustee Russell Brown introduced a resolution to start the process, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.

Lawrence Township firefighters voted to take a 10 percent pay cut this year so no jobs would be cut. But those kinds of savings aren't sustainable without a merger, officials said.

Nov. 13--ANDERSON, Ind. -- The Anderson Fire Department will give up part of its ambulance user fee collections, set aside to maintain equipment and fire stations, to help pay for its salaries in the midst of a city budget crisis.

The City Council on Thursday approved an ordinance that allows the fire department to contribute $890,000 of its user fee money to the general fund, which can pay for firefighters' salaries.
